Its air-hardening characteristic minimizes distortion during heat treatment, making it a preferred choice for precision tooling where tight tolerances must be maintained. A2 achieves a working hardness of 57–62 HRC.
Compared to D-series steels, A2 provides better toughness while maintaining good wear resistance and edge retention. Its good machinability in the annealed condition, combined with predictable heat treatment response, makes A2 a versatile and cost-effective choice for medium-run production tooling across a wide range of cold work applications.
