Grade Overview

D3 Tool Steel — X210CR12

D3 is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold work tool steel valued for its outstanding wear resistance and edge retention. With approximately 2% carbon and 12% chromium, it delivers exceptional hardness (58–64 HRC) making it suitable for demanding cold forming applications.

This grade is ideal for all types of cold forming and drawing dies, powder metallurgy tooling, blanking and trimming dies, cold shear blades, punches, ejector pins, and forming rolls. It also performs well in sheet cutting tools, rotary shear knives, and trimming dies for paper and plastics.

Tempering Curve

Tempering temperature range: 100–600°C. Resulting hardness: 63.5 HRC at 100°C down to 47 HRC at 600°C. Select tempering temperature based on application requirements for the optimal balance of hardness and toughness.

Forging Guidelines

Preheat to 900–950°C, then increase to 1050–1100°C for working temperature. Cool slowly after forging to avoid stress buildup. Always anneal post-forging.
